What Does "Cleaned" Mean in Mailchimp?

In Mailchimp, "cleaned" means Mailchimp removed an address from your audience automatically because email to it bounced. It isn't the same as a clean list, and it isn't an unsubscribe: Mailchimp treats a cleaned address as invalid and stops sending to it.

This page covers what the cleaned status means, how many bounces it takes, whether cleaned contacts count toward your bill, and how to resubscribe, delete or export them.

Short answer

  1. Cleaned means the address bounced. It hard bounced once, or soft bounced repeatedly, and Mailchimp now considers it invalid.
  2. Cleaned contacts don't count toward your audience limit, so they don't add to your bill.
  3. You can't edit a cleaned contact. If the address had a typo, add the corrected address as a new contact.
  4. The way back is usually your signup form, not a direct re-add of the same address.
  5. You can archive, delete or export cleaned contacts by building a segment of them.

What "cleaned" means in Mailchimp

A cleaned contact is an address Mailchimp has marked as invalid after a bounce. Mailchimp sets the status on its own. You don't choose it, and the contact didn't ask for it.

There are two ways an email gets cleaned in Mailchimp:

  • Hard bounce: a permanent delivery failure, for example because the address doesn't exist. Mailchimp cleans the contact after the hard bounce.
  • Soft bounce: a temporary delivery failure. One soft bounce doesn't clean a contact, but repeated soft bounces do (the thresholds are in the next section).

Once contacts are cleaned, Mailchimp keeps them in your audience with the cleaned status but doesn't send to them. Cleaned is not the same as unsubscribed: unsubscribed reflects a choice by the contact or by you, while cleaned reflects a delivery failure.

How many bounces before Mailchimp marks a contact cleaned

A single hard bounce is enough. Soft bounces take longer, and the number depends on the contact's history:

Contact Soft bounces before it's cleaned
No prior activity 7
Prior activity Up to 15

After that many soft bounces, Mailchimp converts the soft bounce to a hard bounce and cleans the contact.

Does a cleaned contact count toward your Mailchimp bill or audience limit?

No. Cleaned contacts don't count toward your audience limit, so they don't raise what you pay.

That also means archiving or deleting cleaned contacts won't lower your contact count. They're already excluded from it. Remove them if you want a tidier audience, not to save money.

Cleaned vs. unsubscribed vs. suppressed

Mailchimp uses three similar-sounding statuses for different things:

Status Who sets it Counts toward your contact limit?
Cleaned Mailchimp, after a hard bounce or repeated soft bounces No
Unsubscribed The contact opts out, or you unsubscribe them It can, for accounts created after 2019-05-15
Suppressed You, by importing addresses into an audience as unsubscribed It can, for accounts created after 2019-05-15 (they're imported as unsubscribed)

For how each status fits into cleaning a list, and how to set up a suppression list, see our guide to cleaned vs. unsubscribed vs. suppressed contacts in Mailchimp.

Can you resubscribe or re-import a cleaned contact?

Not directly. Mailchimp doesn't let you edit a cleaned contact, and you can't simply re-add or re-import the same cleaned address to make it subscribed again (About Cleaned Contacts, checked 2026-09-24).

What you can do depends on why the address was cleaned:

  • The address had a typo. Add the corrected address as a new contact. The cleaned one stays cleaned.
  • The address is correct and the person wants your email. In general, they need to sign up again through your signup form.

Mailchimp's Resubscribe a Contact guide (checked 2026-09-24) describes the signup-form route for contacts who unsubscribed themselves. It's written for unsubscribed contacts, not cleaned ones, and Mailchimp doesn't document a one-click way to resubscribe a cleaned contact. If a specific address matters, check with Mailchimp support before you rely on it coming back.

How to delete or export cleaned contacts

You can archive, delete or export cleaned contacts from your audience:

  1. In your Mailchimp audience, create a segment of contacts whose status is cleaned.
  2. To keep a record, use Export segment to download the cleaned contacts as a CSV.
  3. Select the contacts in the segment, then archive or delete them.

Archiving is Mailchimp's default and can be reversed. Deleting removes the contact from the audience. Either way, your bill doesn't change, because cleaned contacts weren't counted in the first place.

Check it works

To see what the cleaned status in Mailchimp looks like for your own audience:

  1. Open your audience and filter contacts by the cleaned status.
  2. Note the count.
  3. After your next few imports, check the count again. If you validate new contacts before importing them, fewer of them should bounce, so the cleaned count should grow more slowly.

It won't stop growing entirely. Addresses that were fine when you imported them can go bad later, and some results can't be confirmed up front (see the next section).

Troubleshooting

  • "I fixed the typo but can't re-add the same address." Cleaned contacts can't be edited. Add the corrected address as a new contact.
  • "My cleaned count keeps growing." Validate lists before you import them, not after Mailchimp has already sent to them. Every hard bounce becomes a cleaned contact.
  • "I don't see a resubscribe option on a cleaned contact." There isn't a documented one. The contact needs to sign up again through your form.

Next step: validate contacts before Mailchimp cleans them

The simplest way to keep your cleaned count low is to catch bad addresses before they reach Mailchimp.

  • To check individual addresses, use CampaignKit's free email verifier. Each address gets a score from 0 (will bounce) to 10 (fully verified), based on syntax, MX records, an SMTP mailbox check, disposable-address detection, blacklists and catch-all detection.
  • For contacts already in Mailchimp, the CampaignKit Mailchimp integration connects over OAuth, validates your audience in bulk and adds tags such as invalid or risky. It never edits or removes your Mailchimp contacts. The Mailchimp integration docs walk through the setup.

Validation reduces bounces, but it can't prevent every one. Catch-all domains accept mail for any address, and some servers don't reveal whether a mailbox exists, so a few of those addresses may still bounce and get cleaned later. New CampaignKit accounts get 200 free validations.
