List cleaning

Email List Cleaner: Upload, Clean, Download

Our email list cleaner handles the clean up before a send: upload a CSV or Excel file of email addresses, CampaignKit checks each one, and you download a list without the addresses that will bounce. New accounts get 200 free validations, then it's pay as you go and credits never expire.

What an email list cleaner does

An email list cleaner checks every address on your list and sorts it into three groups: keep, remove or review. You then send only to the addresses worth keeping, which means fewer bounces, and bounces harm your sender reputation. The job is also called email scrubbing or list clean up.

CampaignKit is self-serve software: you run the list cleaning in the web app and download the result yourself. For list hygiene beyond validation, such as what to do with inactive subscribers, read our guide on how to clean your email list.

How to clean an email list in four steps

The email list cleaner tool runs online in the CampaignKit web app. Want to see a result first? Check one address in the free single-address checker.

  1. Create a free account. New accounts get 200 free validations, no credit card required.
  2. Start a new validation and add your list. Paste addresses, upload a TXT or CSV file (up to 20 MB), or upload an Excel file, XLS or XLSX (up to 20 MB). You can add an optional description.
  3. Wait for the job to finish. The job page shows how many addresses are Deliverable, Undeliverable and Risky, with their percentages.
  4. Download the groups you want as a CSV. Pick the groups in the download dialog and import the file back into your email tool.

What the results mean

The app sorts each address into one of three groups:

Result What it means What to do
Deliverable Safe to send to (see the catch-all note below) Keep
Undeliverable Will bounce Remove
Risky May cause problems Review, or send to it as a separate segment

When you download, only Deliverable is selected by default. Deliverable includes catch-all addresses: their domain accepts mail for every address, so the individual mailbox can't be confirmed and some may still bounce. They're included by default, and you can uncheck "Include catch-all addresses" to leave them out. Read more on catch-all emails and whether to send to them.

Deliverable is the best signal you have, not a delivery guarantee. Some mail servers won't confirm whether an address exists, and catch-all domains accept everything.

When an address looks like a typo of a well-known provider, for example gmai.com instead of gmail.com, the download includes a suggested correction. Confirm it with the contact before you change the address.

What you download

  • Your own columns stay. If your file has a header row, your columns are kept in their original order, and the result columns are added at the end.
  • Where the addresses go. Put the addresses in the first column or in a column with the header "email". For Excel files, the first sheet is used.
  • Results are kept for 30 days. List cleaning jobs are deleted 30 days after they're created, so download your cleaned list. Run the list again if you need fresh results.

Keep your list clean

Email list clean up isn't a one-time job. Addresses go stale, so check your list again before every big send. To make that automatic:

Email list cleaning pricing

Every new account gets 200 free validations, no credit card required. That's what "free" means here: enough to clean a small list or test a sample, not unlimited cleaning. After that, you pay as you go with no subscription, and credits never expire.

Emails Price Per 1,000
2,500 $6 $2.40
10,000 $15 $1.50
50,000 $75 $1.50
100,000 $120 $1.20

Frequently asked questions

What is an email list cleaner?
An email list cleaner is a tool that checks each address on your list and sorts it into groups, so you can remove the addresses that will bounce before you send. CampaignKit sorts every address into Deliverable, Undeliverable or Risky.
Is CampaignKit a cleaning service or a tool?
It's a self-serve tool. You upload your list in the CampaignKit web app, wait for the job to finish and download the result yourself.
Is there a free email list cleaner?
Every new CampaignKit account gets 200 free validations with no credit card required. That's enough to clean a small list or test a sample of a bigger one. After that, you pay as you go.
How much does it cost to clean an email list?
After the 200 free validations, packs start at $6 for 2,500 emails. 10,000 emails cost $15 and 100,000 emails cost $120. There is no subscription, and credits never expire. For more than 100,000 emails, contact sales for custom pricing.
Which file formats can I upload?
In the web app you can upload a TXT or CSV file up to 20 MB, or an Excel file in XLS or XLSX format up to 20 MB. You can also paste addresses directly.
What do Deliverable, Undeliverable and Risky mean?
Deliverable addresses are safe to send to. Undeliverable addresses will bounce, so remove them. Risky addresses may cause problems, so review them or send to them as a separate segment. Deliverable is not a delivery guarantee, because some domains accept mail for every address and can't confirm a single mailbox.
How often should I clean my email list?
Check your list again before every big send. Addresses go stale, so an address that was valid last quarter can bounce today.
How long are my results kept?
List cleaning jobs are deleted 30 days after they are created. Download your cleaned list before then, and run the list again if you need fresh results.
